Placement tests are used to help academic advisors determine which math, science, or language courses are best-suited to your ability level.
Which tests to take
The placement tests you need to take may vary depending on your major and the type of student you are. Any required placement tests should be taken well in advance of of your Orientation session. International students in F-1 or J-1 status enrolling for fall should complete any required placement tests by May 27 or as soon as possible thereafter.
ALEKS Math Placement Exam
All first-year students are required to take the ALEKS Math Placement Exam. Placement exam results are binding. If you are not satisfied with your initial score and have taken the exam early enough, you will have time to remediate through the ALEKS tutorial and retest before coming to orientation.
Chemistry Diagnostic Test (CDT)
Take the CDT if you are considering a major in any of the health or natural sciences.
World Languages Placement Test (WLPT)
Whether or not you'll need to take a WLPT depends on your high school world language background and your future plans for language study at Iowa.
