First-Year Orientation for Fall, Parent & Guest Program

Matching the expectations that parents and students have of universities, and vice versa, is known to be a major factor in student satisfaction during the college years. We encourage parents to attend Orientation to gain a better understanding of college life.

Programs are coordinated by our Orientation Hawkeye Guides, current UI students trained to assist students and families during Orientation.

Parent program agenda*

Parent and guest sessions, which are concurrent with student programs, focus on academic opportunities, University billing and financial issues, student health and safety information, and ways for parents to become part of the University community while helping their students make a successful transition to college life.  A brief outline of our parent and guest program is listed below.

Arrival time

Your arrival time on Day One will vary based on your involvement in interest sessions designed for specific student populations. We will have a check-in area set up from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Iowa Memorial Union Hubbard Commons. Dinner is not built into the schedule so please plan to eat before or after checking in. There are several eateries in the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU) and a variety of options in the downtown Iowa City area, which is just a few blocks from our check-in location. Our main Program Welcome for all students and families officially begins at 6 p.m.

2:45-4 p.m. Honors Program Information Session (for students who have accepted admittance into the Honors Program), Bijou Theater - Iowa Memorial Union
3-5 p.m. Residence Hall Check-In for Students
3:00 -5:30 p.m. Orientation check-inIowa Memorial Union
