What is Orientation?
Orientation is a required program for all incoming first-year students. It is designed to help you make a smooth transition from high school to college. We offer several one-and-a-half-day programs throughout the summer to prepare you for your first semester at The University of Iowa.
On the first day of your Orientation program, you'll explore and learn about campus in your small group, which will be led by one of our Hawkeye Guides. On the second day of the program, you will work with your academic advisor, plan your fall semester class schedule, and register for classes.
We begin accepting reservations a few months before each new semester (We begin accepting reservations in March for students enrolling for fall). We encourage you to invite your parents or guardians to attend with you. We will have a concurrent orientation program designed specifically for them.
On Iowa! Program
Held the week before fall classes begin, the On Iowa! program is a three-day experience designed to help first-year students make friends, discover Hawkeye traditions, prepare to excel in class, and explore student groups and activities.
The IOWA Challenge
The IOWA Challenge expresses important principles that help students succeed in the classroom and beyond. It establishes what the University of Iowa expects from its students, and what students should expect from themselves and each other. In essence, it’s a mission statement for UI students.
Accommodations for people with disabilities
Accommodations, including sign-language interpreters, are available to you or the person(s) accompanying you in order to participate in Orientation. Please call Orientation Services at 319-335-1497 at least 30 days in advance of your program to alert us to any special arrangements needed for your visit to campus. Please note that we are unable to provide English interpreters.
Programs for nontraditional students
If you are an older student or managing multiple roles (parenting while going to college, for example), one of our One-Day Orientation Programs in August may meet your needs better than one of our one-and-a-half-day programs. If you think you would prefer a one-day program, call Orientation Services at 319-335-1497.
