Journalism & Mass Communication

This living-learing community (LLC) offers a home for you with other first-year students interested in professional media studies.

The Journalism & Mass Communication Living-Learning Community will engage students in social, academic, and creative hands-on activities related to a wide variety of professional media applications, including online, web-based, print, and video forms of journalism and public relations.

Students sharing this major support each other academically and socially. Participation helps students plan the educational and professional experiences that will lead to successful careers in journalism.

Required course

Participants may enroll in the two prerequisite courses for Journalism & Mass Communication: Media Uses and Effects (3 semester hours) orMedia History & Culture (3 semester hours). These courses also count as general education credits.

Activities

Activities for students in this LLC may include:

  • A tour of media sites in Chicago
  • Tours of media production facilities at the Adler Journalism Building, on campus, and in the community
  • A film series featuring classics about journalism and other professional media
  • Mentoring by professional media clubs like student chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists, the National Association of Black Journalists, and the Public Relations Society of America
  • Informal presentations and meals with faculty members
