You’re going to Iowa to learn about the world to learn about its place in the world and to meet new people. You may want to learn languages, travel, work in an international field one day, or dialogue about diversity and world issues.
In the Global Village Living-Learning Community (LLC), you will live with both U.S. students and international students. You will have the opportunity to broaden your knowledge of diversity, international issues, languages, and cultures.
The Global Village is a multilingual, multicultural community that will help you identify your community-building skills while developing your communication skills and cultural competence. You will gain an enhanced sense of community through engagement in activities that connect the classroom to your living environment, including the larger Iowa City area. Global Village is co-sponsored by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, International Programs, and the Center for Diversity and Enrichment.
Required course work
There will be at least one course that students in Global Village will be required to take in common with other Global Village residents.
Students interested in Spanish language and Latino culture will take:
- Music, Food, and Salsa: Exploring Latino Culture, a 1 semester hour course which explores the rich diversity of Latino Culture in Iowa. We may attend cultural celebrations, visit Latino resources on campus, meet Latino student leaders and faculty from the Spanish department, and learn about study abroad and careers involving Spanish-language skills. Assignments include occasional short readings, reflection papers, and a final group creative project.
Students interested in International Crossroads will take:
- Cool Places and Hot Spots, a 1 semester hour course, which will be an exciting romp through world cultures, customs, arts, and traditions, as well as discussions of the what, where, and why of specific global issues. We may attend international celebrations, film screenings, and other arts events. Assignments include short weekly readings and short writing responses.
